Democratic Rep. Gerry Connolly of Virginia said Monday that he will step down from the House Oversight Committee and will not run for reelection due to his ongoing cancer battle.
Connolly, 74, defeated Ocasio-Cortez, 35, by a 131-84 margin, in December to become the next House Oversight Commitee ranking Democrat. Connolly’s victory was seen as a win for former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who is said to have lobbied members to vote for Connolly.
Connolly represents a Virginia Congressional district comprised of Washington, D.C. suburbs. He was first elected in 2008 and has served on the Oversight Committee since 2009. He announced in November that he is fighting esophagus cancer.Â
