Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-LA) leadership hangs by a thread of two to three votes in the House, but the tenuous nature of Republicans’ slim majority isn’t stopping various factions from warring with each other during primary season.
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) is calling moderates “Democrats in drag” and trying to help primary several of them, ostensibly to replace them with more conservative candidates even though they could cost the House the majority if they don’t retain the district.
Supporters of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy are leading their own vendetta against the eight members who voted to oust him, including Gaetz, meanwhile.
That leaves Johnson to try to referee the fractured “family” and get cooler heads to prevail.
“I’ve asked them all to cool it, “Johnson told CNN during the House GOP retreat last week. “I am vehemently opposed to member-on-member action in primaries because it’s not productive. And it causes division for obvious reasons, and we should not be engaging in that.”
“So I’m telling everyone who’s doing that to knock it off,” he added.
