The argument about banning TikTok in the United States dates back to the Trump administration.
Trump had declared that the social media app was dangerous for Americans because it was owned by the Chinese.
Ironically, now that Democrats are pushing the bill to force the sale of TikTok, Trump is the one backing away from the “ban” narrative.
Force the Sale
Former Vice President Mike Pence is now getting involved in this fight, trying to put additional pressure on Senator Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) to put the bill on the floor in the Senate that would force the sale of TikTok.
Advancing American Freedom, a political advocacy group tied to Pence, launched an ad to try to pressure Schumer to put this legislation on the floor.
The group has committed to a $2 million ad buy that will run in several swing states, including Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
The ad states, “Chinese TikTok is building a profile on every American user and has become a digital fentanyl.
“Republicans and Democrats in Washington agree on one thing — we need to stop China by stopping TikTok.”
The bill passed easily in the House, 352-65, but it has been sitting on Schumer’s desk ever since.
Schumer has stated, “The Senate will review the legislation when it comes over from the House.”
Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Mark Warner (D-VA), who supports the bill, has no inclination as to when Schumer will hold a vote.
When asked about the bill hitting the Senate floor, he stated, “They moved obviously very aggressively and quickly in the House. I’m not sure the Senate has that same kind of timetable.”
Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) has been vocally opposed to the bill, believing forcing the sale of a private company is government overreach.
