Maryland authorities on Wednesday said divers recovered two bodies during a search for the workers who plunged into the water after a cargo ship slammed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday.
Divers found a red pickup truck submerged under approximately 25 feet of water in the middle span of the bridge and found the two bodies trapped inside.
Maryland State Police Maryland State Police Superintendent Col. Roland Butler identified the victims as Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes, 35, of Baltimore, and Dorlian Castillo Cabrera, 26, of Dundalk.
Reportedly, Fuentes is from Mexico and Cabrera was originally from Guatemala.
Four other construction workers are also presumed dead and have not yet been recovered. According to multiple reports, they have been identified as:
- Maynor Yassir Suazo Sandoval, 38, from Honduras
- Miguel Luna, 49, from El Salvador
- Two others, from Mexico and Guatemala
A co-worker of the men said he was told the workers were all on break and sitting in their vehicles parked on the bridge when the ship hit the bridge, causing it to collapse into the water below.
Politico quoted Col. Roland Butler of the Maryland State Police as explaining that the other vehicles are trapped amid the bridge structure and divers are not able to safely access them yet.
“Based on sonar scans, we firmly believe the vehicles are encased in the superstructure and concrete that we tragically saw come down,” Butler said.
Maryland Gov. Wes Moore described the incident and closure of the shipping channel as a global crisis. “The national economy and the world’s economy depend on the port of Baltimore. The port handles more cars and more farm equipment than any other port in the country,” Moore said.
