Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) endorsed former President Donald Trump for president after the defeat of all major Republican contenders.
Youngkin made his announcement after Trump’s resounding victory over rival Nikki Haley on Super Tuesday. His endorsement is the first notable one for Trump following Haley’s dropping out.
Youngkin’s statement reads:
“Voters in the Commonwealth and across the country have spoken loudly for President Donald J. Trump and I endorse him for President of the United States.
“His record on border security, restoring American leadership around the world, reducing taxes and lowering the cost of living for all Americans stands in stark contrast to the open borders, failed leadership on the global stage, rampant inflation and higher costs of today.
“It’s time to unite around strong leadership and policies that grow our great nation, not four more years of President Biden.”

Note: The Virginia constitution prevents governors from serving consecutive terms, so Youngkin will not be able to run for re-election when his term ends in January 2026.
Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney, a Democrat who is now running for the governor’s seat himself, erupted over Youngkin’s endorsement of Trump.
Stoney previously served as the Secretary of the Commonwealth of Virginia from 2014 through 2016, during former Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s administration.
“Glenn Youngkin’s endorsement of Donald Trump is a slap in the face to millions of Virginians,” Stoney raged.
“Our Commonwealth rejected Trump’s bigotry in 2016 and 2020 – and will do it again in November. And, in 2025, we are going to replace Glenn Youngkin and take our Commonwealth back,” he added.
