A special election to fill the House seat vacated by outgoing Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colo.) will be held on June 25, the same day as the state’s primary, Gov. Jared Polis (D) announced Tuesday.
Buck unexpectedly announced his resignation from the House on Tuesday, effective next week, after previously declaring that he would not seek reelection.
The special election adds wrinkles to an already complicated House election in Colorado, where Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) is attempting to switch districts to succeed Buck.
In fact, Buck’s resignation from Colorado’s 4th District and the special election has really complicated the situation, at least for Boebert.
The report notes that the 4th District is “solidly red,” but there are 11 candidates running for the seat in the primary, including Boebert, who currently represents District 3.
Who ever wins the special election on June 25 would have a better chance of winning the District 4 seat back in the general election, the report speculated.
If Boebert were to run in the special election in an attempt to serve the remainder of Buck’s term, she will have to resign from her current seat in the House – which would then leave that open as well.
