A surge of black men preferring to vote for President Donald Trump this November, compared to the 2020 presidential elections, has been noted by a poll by the Wall Street Journal in battleground states recently.
According to the poll, 30 percent of black men will back Trump, doubling the number he received, 12 percent, in 2020.
Despite still clinching the majority of black male support (57 percent), there was a significant 30-point drop in Biden’s black male voter support in contrast to the 2020 elections.
WSJ also noted that 42 percent of black women are still unsure who to vote for, while 11 percent remarked that they are rooting for Trump.
Trump campaign spokesperson told WSJ, “Our coalition message to black and Hispanic communities this election is simple: If you want strong borders, safe neighborhoods, rising wages, quality jobs, school choice, and the return of the strongest economy in over 60 years, then vote for Donald J. Trump.”
A Black restaurant manager, Percy Jones, wasn’t impressed with Biden’s performance and remembers Trump’s administration more fondly, especially his policies on migration.
“He didn’t allow people who don’t live here to come in,” Jones said. “They are taking all of our jobs.”
Despite not voting in the previous election, he vowed that he would vote this year and would likely vote for Trump.
“I think Trump did a better job,” he said.
“As president, Biden “wasn’t really helping the community,” Jones said.
“The stimulus checks helped people during the COVID-19 lockdowns, but now those are gone.”
“He has a lot of people fooled,” quipped the restaurant manager.
A similar poll last month reflected that Trump is gaining ground among black voters. According to a New York Times/Siena poll, support for the previous president saw a dramatic shift, rising to 23 percent from only 8 percent in 2020. A recent Quinnipiac survey reported a similar result: 23 percent of black voters want Trump.
James Whitehead, a Kensington resident, quipped that he supports the former president for two simple reasons: “One, I like the realism. Two, he’s a businessman.
He voted for Trump in 2016 and 2020 and expressed frustration with Biden’s handling of the border crisis and economy.
Whitehead also belied Biden’s claim of a record number of new jobs.
“I don’t see it. I still see people struggling to make ends meet,” said Whitehead.
The Kensington resident also described Trump as “unconventional.”
“He’s far from perfect,” he added. “But the imperfect for him makes him perfect for me because…he’s not your average politician.”
