CNN to Move Chris Cuomo to Primetime in the Spring

CNN’s Chris Cuomo will be moving from his morning show “New Day” into his own primetime show, according to a network executive.

CNN is looking to launch “Cuomo Prime Time” in the spring and air it at 9 p.m. EST on weekdays, Variety reports. CNN has not added to its primetime lineup since bringing in Don Lemon to host “CNN Tonight,” and it has generally finished last in ratings among the three major cable news networks.

Cuomo has co-hosted “New Day” since 2013, previously with Kate Bolduan and then with Alisyn Camerota starting in 2015. Cuomo will be replaced by fellow CNN anchor John Berman on “New Day,” according to CNN executive vice president of programming Michael Bass.

Recently, CNN has been airing pre-made documentary programming at 9 p.m. or extending “Anderson Cooper 360” from 8 to 10 p.m. Bass told Variety that CNN needs a fresh, live show in the 9 p.m. spot.

“We need to be live. There’s so much going in every single day, and it made sense just to be on the news. That’s what CNN is all about,” Bass said.

In January, Cuomo hosted a temporary show “Cuomo Prime Time,” although he told The Hollywood Reporter that he had “no ambition” to make the jump to primetime permanently.

Cuomo’s new show would compete with Fox News’ “Hannity” and MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show.”
