Community Education Council District 2, Manhattan’s largest school board district, voted in favor of prohibiting transgender athletes from participating in girls’ sports last Wednesday night.
The district approves the resolution in an 8-3 vote that calls on Manhattan’s education department to review its policy that allows transwomen to play female sports.
The event was attended by parents and members of the board.
Leonard Silverman, CEC district 2 president, highlighted the need for the parents to participate in the conversation and recognized the complexity of finding a universally acceptable resolution.
Silverman added, “Unfortunately, my experience has been that organizations, including community education councils, are sometimes created to give the appearance that parents have control over the process when the reality is that we [really] don’t have any control.”
The CEC District 2 president further said that transgender athletes could have a biological advantage and may create a risk to a “level playing field.”
Although the move did not directly call for a ban, council member Maud Maron, who has been a strong advocate for gender restrictions, sees the resolution as a starting point to up the level of discussions on eligibility in terms of female sports.
“The gender guidelines apply to all students, so all students should have had a say in developing them,” Maron told the New York Post.
“True inclusivity means listening to everyone and listening to ideas you may not agree with. The resolution is advisory and merely asks for a review and redrafting of the gender guidelines after input from more stakeholders.”
Meanwhile, in Nassau County, New York, executive Bruce Blakeman also addressed issues about transgender women’s sports teams. He earlier signed an executive order prohibiting transgender athletes from playing on sports teams at county-run facilities.
Former Olympian Caitlyn “Bruce” Jenner expressed support for a recent NY county policy that bars female sports teams with transwomen from using county-owned facilities.
This ruling will be imposed on more than 100 athletic facilities in New York City’s Long Island suburbs.
Jenner, along with Nassau County’s Executive Bruce Blakeman (R), made her statement in a press conference held at Blakeman’s office in Mineola.
For the transgender Olympia, allowing transgender athletes like herself to compete against biological women will “ruin women’s sports” for years to come.
“Transgender women are competing against women, taking valuable opportunities for the long-protected class under Title IX, and causing physical harm.”
“Let’s stop it now while we can,” pressed Jenner.
