John Barnett, former Boeing manager and whistleblower, was found dead in an apparent self-inflicted wound inside his vehicle after testifying against the powerful aircraft manufacturer company.
According to a police report, Barnett, who was staying in a South Carolina hotel for his deposition, was found holding a silver handgun with a white piece of paper that appeared to be a note. He had a gunshot wound in his head.
Authorities claim that the former Boeing manager died of suicide; however, one of his friends contradicted this.
“I know he did not commit suicide,” remarked Jennifer, who did not provide her last name.
Recalling their last conversation, she remembers asking John:
“Aren’t you scared?”
He replied, No, I ain’t scared, but if anything happens to me, it’s not suicide.”
Jennifer added that: “I know that he did not commit suicide. There’s no way. He loved life too much. He loved his family too much. He loved his brothers too much to put them through what they’re going through right now.”
Barnett was in South Carolina as a whistleblower for a lawsuit against Boeing. He worked as a quality control manager for the company for 32 years and retired in 2017.
According to his lawyers, the former quality control manager discovered and exposed safety problems on Boeig’s 787 Dreamliner; however, instead of fixing these concerns, the company retaliated against him and subjected him to a hostile working environment.
Barnett called out the company for cutting corners to get its 787 Dreamliner off the production line and into service.
In an interview with the BBC, two years after his retirement, he detailed how he complained internally about these serious safety flaws he had detected.
Even co-workers are skeptical of his death.
One employee said, “I don’t know what to believe. We don’t really talk about it on the (assembly) line. We’re on camera from the minute we get on the property. They can hear us. So no one wants to talk about it at work.”
“A lot of people are skeptical because he made some pretty powerful enemies.”
Another staff added, “Nothing surprises me when it comes to Boeing. It’s a good job but you’ve got to stay in line. If you don’t, you won’t work there anymore.”
Barnett’s lawyers challenged police claims of his alleged suicide and demanded a thorough investigation.
Attorneys Robert Turkewitz and Brian Knowles said, “We need more information about what happened to John.”
“The Charleston police need to investigate this fully and accurately and tell the public.
“We didn’t see any indication he would take his own life. No one can believe it.”
“No detail can be left unturned.”
