PONTIAC, Mich. — The first parents to ever be charged, then convicted, in their child’s mass shooting at a U.S. school were both sentenced Tuesday to 10 to 15 years in prison after facing the victims during a sentencing hearing in a Michigan courtroom.
James and Jennifer Crumbley were sentenced one after another by Circuit Court Judge Cheryl Matthews as they appeared together for the first time since they attended joint hearings before their landmark trials were separated last fall. Their son, Ethan, now 17, pleaded guilty as an adult to the 2021 shooting at Oxford High School in suburban Detroit and was sentenced to life in prison.
Oakland County prosecutors had asked Matthews to sentence both Crumbley parents to 10 to 15 years in prison on four counts of involuntary manslaughter, one for each of the students their son killed.
Ahead of the sentencing, families of the victims gave moving impact statements, then both Jennifer and James Crumbley were allowed to speak.
Jennifer Crumbley said, “I’ve taken countless nights in lament over the anguish and shame I carry, knowing what my son did — the harm he caused to innocent lives, the families and to the entire Oxford community.” However, she claimed they had no idea their son was planning or even capable of committing a school shooting, and claimed they were good parents to their son.

James Crumbley said in his statement, “I really want the families of Madisyn Baldwin, Hana St. Juliana, Tate Myre and Justin Shilling to know how truly, how much, how truly sorry I am and how devastated I was when I heard what happened to them. I have cried for you and the loss of your children more times than I can count. I know your pain and loss will never go away. Part of you will be missing forever. But please know that I am truly very sorry.”
James Crumbley, Ethan’s convicted dad, apologizes to the families his son took at the Crumbley sentencing hearing today.
He concludes by addressing the court and asks for fairness in her ruling because “he too grieves”.
