During a rally in Dayton, Ohio, on Sunday, former President Donald Trump sent a message to Chinese President Xi Jinping, raising threats on tariffs.
“Those big monster car manufacturing plants you are building in Mexico right now and you think you are going to get that—nnot hire Americans and you’re going to sell the car to us, no.”
“We are going to put a 100% tariff on every car that comes across the lot,” warned Trump.
The Republican nominee signals concern as automobile manufacturing businesses choose Mexico to create their factories.
Before his speech on March 11, the former President had already made an earlier statement expressing his intent to impose a 50 percent tariff on all cars that China is constructing in Mexico and transporting to sell in the United States.
Furthermore, Trump said this policy would force automobile corporations to stop building the plants. However, he added, “But we don’t do that. We have stupid people running our government, to be honest.”
The Alliance for American Manufacturing warned last month that China poses a threat to the American car industry as it looks to utilize Mexico to construct and route Chinese vehicles.
According to the group, Chinese automakers can utilize the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement to secure more favorable tariffs.
Allowing this essentially gives Chinese companies “backdoor access” to America.
“This is an auto industry backed by the Chinese state. It has invested heavily in foreign markets in order to access more of them,” the report stated.
And there is cause for alarm that Chinese vehicles and parts will only increase their access to the U.S. market, overcoming existing tariffs and evading existing trade enforcement measures, to directly challenge domestic automakers and threaten the jobs of millions of American manufacturing workers.”
During his administration, Trump slammed China for securing unfair trade deals with previous regimes; therefore, in 2018, the 45th president was involved in a trade war with Xi Jinping, trading off tariffs on each other’s products.
Under Trump’s presidency, the trade deficit with China significantly dropped from $347 billion to $308 billion in 2020.
In September last year, Trump warned that Michigan’s auto manufacturing industry would be affected as Biden continued to push for electric vehicles, where most production comes from China.
“The Great State of Michigan will not have an auto industry anymore if Crooked Joe Biden’s crazed concept of ‘all Electric Cars’ goes into effect. CHINA WILL TAKE IT ALL, 100%. United Auto Workers, VOTE FOR TRUMP. Get your leaders to ENDORSE ME, I WILL KEEP ALL OF THESE GREAT JOBS, AND BRING IN MANY MORE. CHOICE IN SCHOOLS, AND CHOICE IN CARS!!!” President Trump said.
